Your final blog post will be about parent involvement in schools. After our discussion in class and your reading of chapter 6 you should have a good understanding of how important this connection is for the success of a child. Watch the youtube links and post a comment about parental involvement. What are your thoughts? Do you have an interesting story from your schooling about your parent or a classmate's parent being involved in school? How important do you think it is? What can you do as a first year teacher to help parents become more involved? Pick one of the questions above as a springboard for your post. I also posted the Homework youtube in case you wanted to view it again.
I have truly enjoyed having you in class. I wish you success on your journey toward becoming a teacher.

Looking back I wish my parents had the opportunity to be involved, I don't think parents were allowed. Only as a "room mother" during parties.
ReplyDeleteI volunteered every chance I had for my son's schools, whether it was in the office or library. I was involved in other areas as well.
I am glad to see schools are encouraging parental involvement.
I loved this class. Thank you for being our instructor.
Parent involvement was only considered valuable in certain things back home. For example, in our early school years, our teachers noticed that the more parents/outsiders there were in the classroom, the more distracted us students got so the parents would be asked to help with events instead of in-class activities. I valued the involvement because our school seemed like a community striving for a common goal which helped us all stay focused. Seeing my parents participate in those events helped me gain a great deal of confidence in myself which I noticed children whose parents did not volunteer lacked.
ReplyDeleteWhen it comes to parent involvement and myself i belive my parents were always involved. They would always be either sending notes or e mails or phone calls to my teachers to make sure i was on top of my work. And my school was always sending notes home with students to get parent signatures of like progress reports and what not. So my school was always on top of things when it came to parent involvement.
ReplyDeleteI think there are a lot of activities for parents to involve when thier children's are younger, pre-schooler, elementary school students. However, there are less activities for high school student's parents in Japan.
ReplyDeleteMy parents, specially my mother was always involved my school activities.
In Japan, elementary school and jounior high school homeroom teachers have to visit student's house once a year to talk to parents. Also, teachers can get to know students' environment. Sometimes it is hard for parents to involve school events. But teachers go to student's house to talk and give information directly( face to face) to parents make parents more comfortable and trust the teacher. Also, if parents want their children to success on thier school work, parents should not say bad thing about teacher in front of thier children. Children feel that the teacher is a bad techer and no longer trust the teacher. Teachers have to work hard to get students's parents to involved, also parents have to have interest in the school work too.
Parent involvement is important and as a teacher I need to try to get the parents as involved as possible. When observing I saw how hard and time consuming of a task that might be. My teacher had an extremely long list of parents to call and email to inform that their child was not doing too well in class. I think email is a good tool to use to communicate with parents. My mom was very involved in my schooling. She was on every PTA and at every extra event. I was very lucky to have a Mom that cared that much. I think she really helped me succeed. I can only dream of having parents like her for my class room.
ReplyDeleteSatoko, I think that is really neat that teachers go to the students home. It is important to understand what a child is going through at home to better teach them in the classroom. Not everyone lives the same way and has the same luxuries. I don't think that will ever happen in America because of all the safety issues and what not, but I think that is really cool that teachers can go to students homes and not worry about their safety. I am sure that really helps them teach each student to their own specific needs.
ReplyDeleteI think that parents should be involved in their child's school. The parents will have a better understanding of what's going on. They can meet the teacher's and get to know them one on one. If the teacher has a problem with the child, it will be eaiser for the teacher to talk to the parent. The parent on the other hand will listen and put more effort into giving their child the attention he or she needs. I think the child will benefit from their parent being there because they know that their parent cares about what's going on in the child's school life. The child will want to tell their parent all the things that go on good or bad. That child will be happy to see their parents coming to meetings or sporting events. That child will also have less of a behavior problem because he or she will know that their parent visits the school often and that will make them behave. As a teacher I will encourage parents to be in their child's school life. I will tell them how important it is and how it can help that child child achieve better.
ReplyDeleteParentsl involvement in school is something that is key in students being successful in the classrooms. If parents are not involved then it makes the students less interested as well. As a teacher i will make sure there are days for parents to come into the class and see what it is the students are doing. It will allow the students to be excited to show their parents what they are learning in class and hopefully it will be an ongoing process to keep the parents involved in their child's class.
ReplyDeleteAs a soon to be father I am extremely excited to be a part of my child’s education. I already have a large collection of books to read to him/her. Parent involvement begins at birth and continues long after the student has felt formal education. Without the inclusion of parents in the learning process students are far more likely to fail – socially and academically. A parent’s lack of involvement not only hinders the student in the classroom but also teaches the child that education is of little value. Conversely, an involved parent is one who impacts their child in an untold number of ways – not only in education.
ReplyDeleteI think it is so important for parents to be in involved in their children's schools. I definately think it will raise the child's achievement level; just like what the woman said in the first video. My mom was head room mother in my fifth grade class so she was around alot so I think that motivated me to do better in class. Also my mom was a secretary at my high school, and that made me do my best in each class, because I knew she could talk with my teachers at any point. Also my teachers could speak to her about me at any point. My mom and i have a wonderful relationship so I really did love having her there, but i definately believe it pushed me to be more successful in my school work.
