Post 7 - Diversity in the classroom
Please view the youtubes posted about Diversity in the Classroom. We briefly discussed it in class this week, but these youtubes enhance the discussion we had in class. For your blog post this week, please reply to the following question - and don't forget to reply to a classmate:What qualities and experiences do you possess or lack that might affect your ability to be a multiculturally aware teacher?

I think that my open-mindedness will help me become a multiculturally aware teacher. I love to learn new things, and not only is it important for teachers to inform students about different cultures, it is also important for students to share what they know. I believe that it would be a good idea to have student groups do projects on different cultures and they could present what they've learned to the class-that way no one feels singled out for being a certain religion or culture, but they still learn. After that, as a teacher, I would emphasize that though we all may be from different places we are all Americans, which I believe would make everyone feel special but together as a unit.
ReplyDeleteI believe that I possess meany qualities and experiences that will help me to be a multiculturally aware teacher. Not only did I got to a High School (Pattonville) that had students from many different cultures, but Lindenwood also possesses that characteristic.I beleieve that goingto these schools has and willhelp me to be more aware of different cultures and know more about them. I also enjoy learning new things and know that I am very accepting of other peoples thoughts and ideas which makes it very easy for me to accept what the other cultures entail and believe.
ReplyDeleteBrittany,
ReplyDeleteI think your idea about having the students do group projects on different cultures is great. That way students could not only learn more about their culture and their classmates cultures but maybe about someone they may meet in the future. I really like how this project includes everyone and they all get soemthing out of it.
I definately agree with Brittany on all of her points. I am also a very open minded person and i think that will allow me to open up to my students and learn about their different backgrounds and cultures. I think it is important to have diversity in the classroom, where ever you go in real life there is always some diversity so the classroom should definately not be an exception. I love the idea of having a group project that the students can work together and learn about each others background. I think it is so important for the students to work together as one and to learn about each others backgrounds and cultures.
ReplyDeleteI have a decent amount of experience with other cultures. I am very involved in the Chinese culture as I train full time(table tennis) with ALL chinese people. I have also traveled to Mexico a few times, so I am aware of some other cultures and languages. I think this will help me as a teacher to be aware of how students of different backgrounds react to different situations
ReplyDeleteHeather,
ReplyDeleteI also believe that my experience here at Lindenwood, which is full of people from diverse cultures, has helped me become more aware of the importance on being not only a multiculturally aware teacher, but simply a person who is multiculturally aware.

ReplyDeleteI was in the Army for 6 years and have been around people from many different countries and backgrounds. I think I have what it takes to because I know different culturals celebrate different holidays, have different religious practices, and do things in different ways. I am very open minded and look to people for different ideas and new ways to do things.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Heather. Being around students from different backgrounds help you when you're growing up. It makes you aware of the people around you. It lets you know that there are many different people in the world besides the ones you know.
ReplyDeleteIt is crucial that teachers are open-minded and culturally aware. We as individuals have so much to learn from the experiences of others – as educators we should welcome others into our classrooms so as to better prepare our students. Activities such as multi-cultural events and classroom exercises should be a required element of ever curriculum, regardless of age. I feel that, as a manager of others of many cultural backgrounds I have skills that will effectively translate into the classroom. I welcome the experience.
ReplyDeleteWhile I agree that Lindenwood does represent many different cultures and communities I would welcome a university sponsored event to raise awareness I feel that too often we as different ethnic groups (perhaps) unknowingly segregate ourselves. An event, in which different cultures are brought together, would allow our student body to grow and develop outside the classroom just as we do inside of it.
