I've posted many qualities of an effective teacher on the right hand side of our blog....take a look at the list, thinking about the value of each characteristic. After you've reviewed the list carefully, please post your response to the following question.....
Congratulations! You've just landed the teaching position of your dreams. You begin packing your things to fly to the new school district and realize, due to the increased costs of gasoline, you can bring with you only three suitcases. Each suitcase can hold only ONE quality of an effective teacher...which three would you take with you and why?
Don't forget to also post a response to one of your peers. Happy Writing!

If I had to take only three qualities of an effective teacher with me, I would have to take organized, passionate, and patient.
ReplyDeleteThe reason I would take organized with me is because, as a effective teacher, you have to be able to organize information so your students can understand it and remember it. Also, being organized helps not waste valuable time. For example, today, you had all the paperwork organized before you came into class so we were able to use our time in the best way possible.
Being passionate about what you are teaching passes on to your students energy about the subject and (hopefully) gets them excited!
Patience is a good quality to have because in order to work with any group of people, especially children, you have to be patient. Otherwise you will become overwhelmed and fustrated. Your students will see this and feel that you are not an effective teacher.
I think that if I had only three qualities to take with me as a teacher they would being respectful, organized and understanding of individuals needs. I would choose these three things, first of all because by showing your students respect, most of the time you will receive it in return. Organization, I feel is another important facture in teaching, because if the teacher is unorganized her class will be too. Being understanding of individuals needs seems to play a large role in the classroom, because not all students learn at the same pace or the same way.
ReplyDeleteKatie,
ReplyDeleteI agree with you about the qualities of being an effective teacher. All of the comments you made seem like they play important roles in not only being an effective teacher, but having an effective classroom as well.Having passion in teaching, I feel would make the class know that you really want each one of them to learn and succeed in what you teach them. Also patience is key, because Im sure that students will test our patience and it will be important not to let them push our buttons to much.
wow! well there are so many qualities i believe a teacher should have but in the experience of some of the great teachers i have had, i would say the three qualities of an effective teacher are: interactive, energetic and loves what they do! These qualities, to me, are very important. first of all, i believe being interactive is a very important role because a teacher must get to know their students in order to understand their needs and qualities to help them learn more and give them the advice and quidance they need! Secondly, i believe to be energetic is another important factor because to teach all day long to different students or even the same, the teacher has to be able to keep up with the teaching and also help the kids from getting bored and away from their studies! Finally i also believe that the most important quality is to love what you do. If you do not love your job then that will show the studens that you do not care. If you do not care then he students will not care. This can not happen because a teachers job is to show students the importance of what they teach and help them learn a better way!!!
ReplyDeletePatty,
ReplyDeleteI absolutley agree with your response to this question. Being respectful is a huge role in a classroom. basing on what you said you have to give respect to recieve it back. i love that quality. Also being organized is defintley key to a classroom. If the teacher is unorganized then it is true the classroom will be out of control. very important. Lastly being understanding of individual needs is postivly a huge factor in the classroom. All students do learn at different paces and it is for the teacher to be able to understand that and help them with the pace that they learn.
Casey,
ReplyDeleteI liked what you said about loving what you do! It's probably easy to forget when you are so busy teaching, that you have to love your job or your students will pick up on that. If they pick up on that you are just going through the motions, then that is all they will do also in their homework and learning. So loving your job, also helps your students to love learning!
If I had only three qualities to take with me, I would have take passionate, organized, and well versed in subjects.First of all, If I am a passionate teacher I can proud of what I am doing. None of students want to have a teacher who is not proud of the work. Also, If I am a passionate teacher, students can feel it and follow the teacher. Second, organized is one of the key to be an effective teacher. If I don't organized, students will get confuse and might not to get right information. I don't want to wast their time. Also, students are watching teachers. Teachers are not just teaching subjects, but also showing them how to study, how to be a good person, and moral even(in Japan, elementary school teachers have to teach moral class. so teachers have to be a model person...) I don't want my students to be disorganized people.
ReplyDeleteLast, well versed in subjects. I put this because I think it is very important. If teachers don't have knowleg, how do they answer student's questions. In Japan,( not only Japan but Korea, China,India, and so on),students go to another school after school to study more. So, they study adead to pass a good University in their future. Because students study a lot, sometime, they ask teachers difficult questions. If the teacher can't answer the question, they feel that they don't need to go to school but another school( we call it CRAM SCHOOL)IN fact, high school student absent from school to attend Cram school.
I know what I am writing is different from American viewpoint. I would like to know what you think about my opinion and I am happy to share the education differences between here and Japan.
Ps. Sorry that my English is not good. I hope you all understand what I am writting.
Three qualities that I can take with me would have to be, able to connect with students, passionate, and thorough lesson plans. A teacher has to be passionate about what they are teaching to have thorough lesson plans. Students will connect with the teacher if they enjoy being in the class. Then the teacher connects back with the students when the students are engaged in her lessons. So, you have to possess all three of these qualities to have the highest impact on how the students learn and retain the information you are providing them.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you Katie. I hated in school when a teacher would lose papers, or not hand back your work in a timely manner for you to study or even just look over. We have all had the teachers and professors that were not passionate about teaching, and they were just monotone, and students never retained the information need.
ReplyDeleteKatie
ReplyDeleteI agree with your opinion.
I think that patience is a good quality to have. Especially children, they can't do things as adults can do. They need time to complete.patience is necessity.
I know I'm posting more than three things :), but Satoko, I really liked what you said about a teacher being a model person! They are role models and so they better be organized, passionate, and knowledgeaable. This will help teachers teach their students how to be the best that they can be.
ReplyDeleteI am posting three things that i would love to bring to the table as a teacher. I think first off you have to be able to relate to the kids and start of by being able to connect with the students and show them that they can trust you. The next thing i would bring is to be able to change the way they thin aout the subject your thinking in very different ways. The last thing is just be down to earth and always be there for your students and be passionaite about your teaching.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you lori especially when your saying about connecting with the students. I think that is a huge issue with some teachers and professors, in turn they dont get alot of respect in what there trying to do. Which could snowball into things like not learning anything, being bored in the class, and maybe the student not getting the most they could get out of there learning experience.
ReplyDeleteIf i could only bring three of those qualities with me the first one i would bring would be able to connect with the students. Simply so that they know that they can relate to me and know that im down to earth. The second would be funny because when i was in school any teacher that could make me laugh could always keep my attention in class. And the last quality would be to care about my students. I feel that a teacher who shows his or her students that he cares about them is geting the students trust and i feel trust is a big advantage in teaching.
ReplyDeleteI agree with what bret had to say because any teacher who can relate to his or her students i always liked a lot. And when you talked about a teacher being down to earth and being passionaite about his work and students shows the students that he cares about them and wants them to succeed in school and life.
ReplyDeleteThe three qualities of an effective teacher that I wish to possess are to fully understand the individual needs of my students, to be able to connect with students and to provide a learning environment that is inspiring. I wish to understand the individual needs (learning styles, ect) so that I may effectively educate. Understanding individual needs assumes that a connection between student and teacher has been made; therefore a second quality that I wish to possess is that of being able to connect with my students. The third quality that I feel an effective teacher possess is that of inspiring students to become more than they originally thought possible. To inspire they to think for themselves, to develop skills and thought processes that will aid them in their education and careers.
ReplyDeleteAn effective teacher has many qualities. The qualities of effective teachers in my life were: encouraging, love job and students, and cares about students.
ReplyDeleteIf you encourage a child you will connect with them and they will learn.
If you love your job it will be reflected through your students.
And caring about your students, if there is a problem in their life it will help them to know someone cares.
"Katie"
ReplyDeleteI agree with you about being organized. There were times when I was substituting that I would walk into a classroom where the teacher was unorganized. There would be no lesson plan and a huge pile of papers that needed to be graded. So I would say that is a very good quality.
The three qualities i would take are; able to connect with students, energetic, and being patient.
ReplyDeleteI would take the ability to connect with students because if you can not connect with them then it will be a lot harder than normal to teach them where as if they see you as someone they can count on they will be more willing to listen to you.
Energetic because then you will be able to stay up to the kids always be one step ahead of them so to speak.
Third would be patients. This quality would probably be the most valued because it would allow you to teach everyone not just the kids who get everything at the first glance.
"Mary"
ReplyDeleteI agree with your choice of caring about your students. You make a good point when you say they will more likely connect with you, giving them someone to look up to and confide in.
I definitely agree with everyone about the caring aspect-I think it is very important for students to have someone other than their parents to look up to. I also agree that a teacher should be passionate-there is nothing worse than sitting through a boring class. I fell that it is also important for a teahcer to have integrety.
ReplyDeleteThere are many, many characteristics of an effective teacher. All of which have their own values and effects on you and your class. I hope one day to possess all of these values, however if i could only take three of these characteristics they would be inspiring, loves job/students and respectful. I would take inspiring because you don't want a teacher that doesn't intrigue you or inspire you to do as well as you can. An inspiring teacher can take a student that is below average and show them and inspire them to be the best that they can. I would also take the love of my job and students. Knowing that everyday you are going to wake up and do something that you love with people that you love is one of the things that keeps you going. Nobody wants to work at a job that they don't love, and better yet students don't want or should never have a teacher that does not love their job or them. The last characteristic I would take would be respect. You must respect people before they can respect you. The best classrooms are those where everyone is respectful to not only the teacher but also to their peers and to things in the classroom. With me being respectful to the students they will learn how important it is to be respectful to others. Those are the characteristics that I would bring with me, if I was only to bring three.
ReplyDeleteCasey,
ReplyDeleteI completely agree with all three of the characteristics you picked. All of your characteristics go great together and I especially think being energetic is important. I didn't originally think of that as a very important characteristic until I read your explanation. Being energetic is a huge part of being a teacher and engaging the students.
This is Shawn Hunter. Three things that I would bring with me would be excitment, thorough lesson plans, and be able to listen to the student and to other teachers.
ReplyDeleteI would bring excitment because it is broad and for me, excitment could consist of being funny and energetic.
I would bring thorough lesson plans because it shows organization, and it would save me time. Then I would be able to focus more on individual students.
I would bring listening to the student and to other teachers because it shows that you are concerned. I could result in good communication with others, not to mention you could relate to them and be able to help them out or lead them in the right direction.
Heather I agree with you because if teachers didn't inspire there students, they may not think they're good enough and could give up.
ReplyDeleteThe love thing is good to because I know I don't want to wake up and hate that I have to go to work, not to mention, if that was the case then my students would not want me to be there teacher because I would most likely show that I don't care about my job in the classroom.
Finally, I agree too, respect is a good quality to have because once you have or gain respect from one another everything seems to run smooth and fall into place. Furthermore, everyone leaves school feeling good about themseleves and complimenting others.
If I could take 3 qualities of a good teacher they would be 1. able to connect with students. Teachers who are able to connect with their students have a better chance of teaching them something they will remember. I had a teacher in 3rd grade named Mrs. Mudd she is the only elementary teacher of mine I can remember and it's because she knew how to connect with us and gain our trust she made learning fun. #2. well versed in subjects. I think it's important for an educator to be educated as well. How can I teach someone if I can't teach myself or expect someone to learn if I'm not willing, we need to set a good example and show students that learning is fun, valuable, and worthwhile. #3 Cares about students. If a teacher truly and genuinely cares about their students they will have many of the qualities listed above. They will take the time necessary to make sure they are doing everything possible to teach young minds and inspire them and be concerned for their needs. Just as a mother cares for her newborn. And a teacher who doesn't care will try and do just enough to get by or be more concerned for themselves than the students.
ReplyDeletehey this is monica gonzalez The three qualities I would take are; to be able to connect with students, understanding individual needs, and to have patience. I would use these three because you have to be able to connect with your students on the same level, to understand what they may need and what would be the best way to teach the lessons that you are teaching. To help your class learn more and have them understand. I would have to understanding individual needs, for the reason that not every student in you class well understand what to do by the way you may be teaching the specific subject. So you as a teacher need to understand that and figure out a way how you can help that student learn, what you are teaching in a simple and much easier way. Also I would need patients, because as a teacher you have to be patient. You can’t get frustrated and mad when you students are not understanding or not listing to you. You can’t forget that their kids and you may have to repeat yourself over and over again.
ReplyDeleteIf I were only able to bring 3 of these qualities with me they would have to be; being organized, energetic, and understanding individual needs. The reason why I would want to be organized is because organization is important so that a student's work doesnt get lost and it would be easier to stay on track with the lessons that I will be teaching. Being energetic is also an important quality to have because if you aren't energetic or excited about what you are teaching, then the students will lose interest fast and not learn as much as they could. Finally, I think it is good to have the quality of understanding the individual needs of students because all students are different and learn at different paces. Also each student has their own learning style and by learning and understanding this about every student, it allows teachers to teach each learning style effectively.
ReplyDeleteHeather,
ReplyDeleteI agree with what you said about wanting to posess all of the qualities listed to become an effective teacher. But the three that you specifically pointed out I think are very important as well. Its great to know that you can inspire your students and have an impact on what they are learning. Loving your job and the students I also think is important because if you didnt love what you do then I really don't see the point in doing it. And what you said about having respect in the classroom to not only the teacher but to all of the peers as well is a very good point. Respect in a classroom between everyone makes the enviornment a lot easier to work in and allows everyone to want to be there.
There are so many qualities I feel an effective teacher needs, but as an individual I would bring passionate, encouraging, and able to understand individual needs. I feel that many people could probably choose to be a teacher if they wanted to, but to be legitimately effective they have to be passionate about helping the students learn. Being passionate leads into other characteristics, such as being energetic, inspiring, loving the job/students, etc. I feel that being encouraging is important because as a teacher, you are the one inspiring the teacher to learn and if you aren't there to support them, they aren't going to want to do it. And each teacher must understand the individual needs of their students. Not all students learn the same way or are able to understand certain things, and the teacher must know that.
ReplyDeleteAshley,
ReplyDeleteI agree with your three qualities. Being organized is huge. I have had teachers that I would get frustrated with because they would always lose assignments, and even tests. Yikes! They were never prepared for class, and we would spend 10 minutes just waiting for them. I agree that being energetic keeps the students involved because they are interested in how you are helping them learn and it shows them you are happy to be there. And we both want to be able to understand the individual needs...
I think the three top qualities of a effective teacher are that they are organized, inspiring, and are able to connect with there students. I believe organization is really important; it always made me nervous when a teacher had a messy desk, I was afraid that they would lose completed assignments which would be so frustrating. I believe that a teacher should be inspiring, students look up to there teachers and some positive inspiration is what the teachers should be giving to their students. Lastly however very important is that teachers need to be able to connect with there students, If they cannot connect with there students then it is going to be a little hard communicating to one another.
ReplyDelete*Krista*
ReplyDeleteYou have picked some excellent points and have very good reasons for them! I now wish i would of picked encouragement after reading your post. It is so true, teachers need to understand the needs of each individual student!
The three qualities I would take with me are organized, ability to connect with student, and passionate. I think organization is very important because if your notes are sloppy and hard to read students will not understand them. They will spend more time trying to make out your notes than understanding the material. It is also important to be organized with your papers and grade book. That way the student knows how they are doing in the class. I think it is very important to connect with the students so you know what is the best method to teach them. You have to know how your students learn to be able to effectively teach them. It is also important to connect with your students so they feel comfortable coming to you with any questions or problems they have. The last quality I would bring is being passionate. You have to love what you teach so your students will be more interested. I think if you are passionate about what you are doing then you will be better at it.
ReplyDeleteAshley, I agree with being organized. I think its really bad when techers lose assignments and tests. That should never happen and it is very discouraging as a student to have your assignment lost. It makes you feel unimportant. I also think engergetic was a good choice. That keeps things interesting and not boring, so students will want to learn.
ReplyDeleteI agree with everyone it is important to be organized, however, it is also very important to be flexible. It is horrible when a teacher has planned every moment of every day and something goes wrong and they do not know where to continue-so I think flexibility is also very important.
ReplyDeleteI completely agree with Mandy about the teacher being able to connect with their students. I think this is the most important quality in a teacher simply because if you cant connect and have a relationship with your students it will be harder for them to pay attention and actually take in what you are trying to teach them. I also think that flexiability and organization are key qualities.
ReplyDeleteIf I landed the teaching position of my dreams the three characteristics I would want to being along with me would be able to connect with students, energetic, and encourage interest in subjects. I believe that these three characteristics are very important to be an effective teacher. I think that being able to connect with students is important because it gives the teacher the ablility to be one on one with a student and understand them as a individual. Being energetic is also important because it will keep the students interested and it will help create a positive atmosphere. Also encouraing interest in subjects is a great quality because the teacher creates a understanding for the student and help them actually learn important material.
ReplyDeleteReading the posts and seeing what other people whould have in their suitcase I realized there was a lot of great points made. I agree with Ashley Bruce when she touched on the importance of understanding individuals needs. I agree that each child is different and it might take one student longer to learn something that another student might just pick up right away on. I also agree with Esther Yoder when she talks about caring for your students. That is a very important quality that every effective teacher should have.
ReplyDeleteThe three characteristics I would be taking along with me would have to be able to connect with the students, well organized, and creative. Being able to connect with your students is a great and necessary quality in an effective teacher because students will appreciate and tend to listen and understand you more if they have a relationship with you. Being organized is also very important. If your not organized your students are going to have a hard time paying attention to you. Being a creative teacher most important. Lesson plans should be fun and exciting. Being able to teach something that is very boring in a fun and entertaining way is a great quality. No one likes doing the same thing every single day in class!
ReplyDeleteOne characteristic I would take is to be able to connect with the students. If you do not connect with the students, they are not going to pay attention when you are teaching which means they will not grasp what you are teaching. Another characterisic I would take would be to be organized. You need an organized teacher to keep all papers organized and to have your lessons organized so the students pay attention. The last characteristic I would take would be good communication. Communication is key with the student- teacher relationship. If there is no communication there is no way you can ask questions if you ever have an issue.
ReplyDeleteKayla,
ReplyDeleteI agree when you say that a teacher needs to be creative. That goes along with connecting with the students. If you are not creative the students will have a very hard time paying attention to the teacher and understanding what they are saying. I also agree that lesson plans should be fun and exciting.
I agree with Angela's statement regarding communication. The ability to clearly and accurately convey a message is of great importance in speaking to students, parents, and coworkers.
ReplyDeleteI also agree with Angela's statement about communication. A teacher needs to be aware of the abilities and capabilities of his/her students in order to properly communicate what is expected of them. If they confused or lost about a lesson they should also be encouraged to ask questions. Too often even at our age we are afraid to raise our hand and ask questions because people might think were incompetent so we have to make the classroom a safe and encouraging environment for students to learn.
ReplyDeleteI really agree with what Mandy said about teachers having messy desks. In ninth grade my english teacher had a desk that was so messy she lost everything-including my best friends term paper! For weeks she said that my friend never even turned it in, until finally we convinced her she had it. Once she decided to clean that clutter off her desk she found the paper!
ReplyDeleteIf I could only pick three qualities they would have to be patience, organization, and the ability to interact with the students. I understand that working with children all day long can be stressful, but it is important for teachers to always be able to keep their cool. Organization is one quality that is necessary for teachers. They have all kinds of papers and appointments to keep track of. These skills are also key to lesson plans, I can never understand a teacher who talks in circles. My last quality is the ability to be interactive with students, this (in my opinion) is essential to the learning process. Some students are only visual learners and when a teacher talks the whole time those students get left behind. Although each of the qualities listed are important to teachers, these three were the most meaningful to me.
ReplyDeleteIf I could only take three qualities of an effective teacher with me I would take organization, flexibility, and passion. I would take these three because, as a teacher it is very important for you to be organized, and know where everything is when you need it so that you can utilize the teaching time that you have with your students, and not spend the entire class looking for what you wanted to use.
ReplyDeleteI would choose flexibility because it is important as an elementary school teacher to be flexible. Many times in the classroom especailly in a classroom of younger children things will not always work out as planned, when this happens you must be able to accept what has happend, and have the ablilty to go on with the days plans.
A teacher must always be passoinate about there work. If you are not passionate about what you are doing it will show in your expression, and in your teaching styles. This will come off to the kids in a negative way and they will want to be there just as much as you do.
The three qualities of an effective teacher I would bring with me are good communication skills, organizational skills, and understanding individual needs. A teacher needs to communicate well with his/her students. Having good communication skills will allow the teacher to reach out to all levels of students. The students need to understand what you are saying to them. Communication is a key factor in getting the lesson to stay with the students. Being organized is a way to stay on top of your game. When you walk into class you need to know what your lesson plan is. Your students need to believe that their teacher know what he/she is doing. Staying organized will keep you focused on your plan for the day. Understanding individual needs of the students is important. You need to be able to reach students at different levels. Some students excel faster than others. Staying on track with the students and their individual needs will help the learn better and help you master your teacher skills.
ReplyDeleteI also agree with many of the statements about organization. I think that it is so important for a teacher to know where everything is when they need it. I have had teachers before that have never given our tests back because they lost them. It is the responsibility of the teacher to keep everything organized so that things are handed out and returned on time. It is also important especially with younger children because they will mimic what they see, and pick up habits. If the teacher they are around is organized they may pick up that trait.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Brittany White when she says you need to know how your students learn in order to teach them effectively. You need to have one on ones with your students. If you notice that a student fails in the same area over and over, you should spend a little more time with that student or set up a tutor session. Sending home practice work isn't a bad idea either.
ReplyDeleteMy three suitcases would hold encouragement, flexible and exciting because i feel that if the class is not exciting then kids will not pay attention as much and thus not learn anything. I feel teachers need to be flexible because sometimes life happens and not everyone can be perfect. Encouragement is always important too because without it students will not have the confidence in themselves to get the work done.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Patty when she says teachers need to be organized also because if they are not organized then the class is very disorganized and also i hate when teachers lose my papers because of their disorganization.
ReplyDeleteThe three traits that I would choose are compassionate, organized, and being able to relate to the students. An organized is going to be an effect teacher. A compassionate teacher and one who can relate to his/her students to me goes hand n hand. Compassionate teachers are going to care about the students, how they are doing in the class, and if they are having problems outside the class they I would think would try to help. To me a teacher who can relate with his/her students is someone will can earn their students respect, and become a better teacher because of that.
ReplyDeleteI have to agree with everyone who talked about organization. Messy desks, not handing papers and test back one does feel a dislike about those teachers. They may tell they friends not to take that class with that teacher if they can get out of it. Their will be complaints from parents and coworkers as well.
ReplyDeleteThe first of the three traits that I would chose is definitely cares about students. I feel that ultimately, many of these other charecteristics will stem from this care of students. If it matters to you what happens to your students, you will desire to be the best teacher you can be. The second trait is to not be afraid of mistakes. This goes two ways. Everyone is inevitably going to make mistakes, both large and small. So it is not beyond a teacher to create fault. If a teacher can recognize and admit their own mistakes, then a student is likely to follow the example and take responsiblity for their mistakes as well. The third and final trait would definitely be to include all students. There are some people, like "Pokey" in our book, who are going to be picked on by everyone around them. This is not a teacher's place. A teacher should be one of the most accepting people in a student's life. They should never be the one to cause a student to feel like an outcast.
ReplyDeleteSakamoto,
ReplyDeleteI wanted to say that your comment about the schooling in Japan was very interesting. I think it's cool to read things from a different perspective. Also, I agree with your opinion on a teacher being well versed in subjects. I have always thought that a teacher is more respected when they know about a variety of subjects besides just their own.
Mrs Bishop,I don't fully believe in the "NCLB". I was never pushed in high school to my highest level by my teachers because there were other students that didn't understand everything I did. This was especially true in math. I am majoring to be a math and sped teacher and I have loved math my whole life. When I was younger, my dad would test me outside of school just so I could learn more. I think that students should have the opportunity to advance their knowledge in a subject that they want. I know I wasn't the only kid in school that wanted to learn faster in math, and I think those students and I should have been able to be in a class that studied harder math than the basic classes of math I was forced to take. If a student wants to learn faster than the others, they should have a class they can do that in. Basically when you graduate grade school, all students know the same amount, and I wanted to know more. What do you think?
ReplyDeleteSimple. I would take integrity, mercy, and a sense of humor. I find integrity is lacked by our culture as a whole, mercy is needed by all of mankind, and everybody hates a teacher who has no sense of humor and can never have a good time.
ReplyDeleteMike,
ReplyDeleteIt's a shame about your high school math situation. Use that experience to become the best math teacher imaginable!
Great Job! If you post after this post it will not be recorded for a grade.
ReplyDelete
